Head south to confront the evil growing there.
Area | Goal | Quests & Cinematics
Bruenor: |
Been long 'nuff walkin' these southern roads, but we ain't seen nothin' out o' tha ordinary. Ye sure we're on tha right course, Nayeli?
Nayeli: |
I'm positive, Bruenor. Something evil stirs across these lands. I can feel it.
Vlahnya: |
If south is where we're traveling, we might make for Elturel. I have some contacts among the Hellriders who protect the city, and one in particular who's holding some spellbooks for me.
Celeste: |
The Hellriders of Elturel have a reputation for raising their swords against evil. If there's any foulness at large in these lands, they'll have heard about it.
1 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The road to Elturel should be an easy march! At least once these rabbits are out of the way...
2 | Defeat 25 Monsters | It's not just your presence that has these rabbits spooked. Push past this pack to see what's going on.
Minsc: |
This is strange things. Look there to the sky. Darkness spreads like storm clouds, but no hint of rain on the air.
Nayeli: |
And it's due south. Exactly where the presence of evil has been drawing me.
Boo: |
Squeak! | |||||
Minsc: |
Boo agrees. We must move cautiously.
3 | Collect 25 Vulture Feathers | Vultures in flight add even more menace to the skyline. Clip these scavengers' wings to keep them moving!
4 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Imps on the wing are backing up this vulture flock! Look sharp!
Bruenor: |
'Tis gettin' even darker. Minsc and Nayeli is both right. Whatever's ahead ain't nothin' natural.
Jarlaxle: |
I've traveled these roads a time or two. What's ahead is Elturel -- or at least it should be.
Nayeli: |
Jarlaxle, do you see any light beneath that shadow? The city is protected by the magic they call the Companion. A second sun whose light vanquishes undead. We're close enough that we should see it by now.
Jarlaxle: |
I don't see it. And I'm pretty sure we're not going to like what that means...
5 | Defeat the Poison-Spitting Spider | A poison-spitting spider advances under the cover of this unnatural dusk! Hit it hard!
Jarlaxle: |
GAH! I'm blind! | |||||
Celeste: |
Shield your eyes and gain your footing friends, something is heading our way!
Jarlaxle: |
Whatever they are, they look huge!!
6 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Creatures have been spooked by whatever's happening to the south. Get ready!
Jarlaxle: |
No one says a word. | |||||
Boo: |
Squee? | |||||
Jarlaxle: |
Not. One. Word. | |||||
Nayeli: |
Watch yourselves, everyone. These are the Fields of the Dead before us. Ancient battlegrounds whose fallen are sometimes restless.
Bruenor: |
Oi! There's a lot o' folk on tha road up ahead. Movin' slow. Kind o' shamblin', if ye know what I mean.
Jarlaxle: |
I think we can upgrade 'sometimes' to 'right now.' Zombies!
7 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The fallen of the Fields of the Dead are a welcoming commitee you don't need. Watch out!
8 | Collect 25 Zombie Rags | The rags of their ancient uniforms are all that hold these zombies together. Tear them free to lessen the undead threat!
9 | Defeat 25 Monsters | A ghoul pack lends its ferocity to the zombie charge!
10 | Defeat the Orc Zombie | The ghouls make a last stand -- with a powerful orc zombie behind them!
Bruenor: |
Elf, ye said ye know these roads. How much farther ta Elturel?
Jarlaxle: |
I'd say at least a day's march away. But not being able to see the Companion makes it a rough guess at best.
Bruenor: |
We'd best set a camp fer tha night, then. Takin' on more undead by dark ain't gonna get us there any faster.
Celeste: |
I don't feel particularly well rested. But that gloom has lifted at last.
Nayeli: |
Not for me. Something terrible has happened ahead. I feel it in my very soul.
Jarlaxle: |
Everyone look sharp. Minsc and I scouted the road, and there's trouble.
Minsc: |
Is true. Caravans attacked. Wolves howling. And no Companion in the sky!
Nayeli: |
Darkness has come to Elturel. We need to discover what's happened there, and quickly.
11 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Wolf packs are already scouring these destroyed caravans for easy prey. Send this pack packing!
12 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Hopefully, clearing out these wolf pups will make the elders reconsider their attack.
13 | Collect 25 Bear Paws | Even as the wolves fall back, a force of bears presses in! Taking some trophies from these beasts might make them think twice about this fight!
14 | Defeat 25 Monsters | A marauding pack of scarecrows emerges from the fields ahead -- and the wolves you routed earlier are back for a rematch!
Nayeli: |
There! Someone's moving through the remains of that caravan.
Bruenor: |
A survivor, maybe? Or one o' them responsible fer whatever's happenin' here?
Nayeli: |
She might have answers either way. Come on!
15 | Defeat the Bandit Ranger | The scarecrows have you hemmed in! And a bandit ranger takes a break from looting caravans to take advantage of your plight!
16 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The bandit ranger's forces catch up to their fallen master -- and are spoiling for a fight! Teach these thieves a lesson!
Nayeli: |
These bandits are nothing but common thugs. None of them seem to know anything.
Jarlaxle: |
I questioned one who seemed a little more talkative than the others. He mentioned people fleeing the city in fear, and running straight into these looters.
Celeste: |
Fleeing? From what? Is Elturel under attack?
Nayeli: |
That makes no sense. The city is well defended. An attack would bring people inside the walls, not outside. Hurry, my friends. We need to keep moving.
17 | Defeat 25 Monsters | More thieves press in! Hit them hard!
Nayeli: |
You! You lead these brigands? I'll give you one chance for parley.
Bandit Captain: |
Ha! Unless you're so scared you've forgotten how to count, you can see we've got the numbers on our side. You're surrounded and about to be out-fought. So turn over your gear and maybe we'll let you join the rest of the Elturel rabble on the run for Baldur's Gate.
Bruenor: |
Ain't got no problem countin', friend. But ye might wanna brush up on yer subtraction as we start whittlin' yer numbers down.
18 | Defeat 1 Blockade | A barricade of logs leaves you vulnerable to ranged attacks! Tear it down, and quickly!
19 | Defeat 25 Monsters | These thieves don't know when to give up!
Bruenor: |
Hey, now dinna that work out just like I said? Oi, captain! Divide tha number o' sneak thieves ye got left by tha number ye started with. That's yer chance o' walkin' away from this fight, and that number's dwindlin'.
Bandit Captain: |
Feh! Heroes, are you? Trying to fight the good fight? I'll leave you alive just to march you up to Elturel so you can see what you're fighting for.
Nayeli: |
You're all talk, brigand. So talk about what's happened in the city.
Bandit Captain: |
What? And spoil the surprise? No, I think I'll let you see it for yourselves... and when you do, you'll understand there's a new order in these lands. The time for heroes is done.
20 | Defeat the Bandit Captain | The bandit captain who leads these ruffians sets up a last stand!
Celeste: |
I've never felt a greater sense of foreboding. All this destruction. Refugees fleeing for Baldur's Gate. Has Elturel been overrun?
Bruenor: |
Only one way we're gonna find out. Close up and push on, Champions! Tha city gates should be... just ahead... ?
Nayeli: |
Faith and light, no... | |||||
Bruenor: |
Can't believe what I'm seein'. Celeste... it's some kind o' illusion. Ain't it?
Celeste: |
No, Bruenor. By all the gods, what could have done this? Elturel is... gone...
Reya: |
This was no act of the gods, but evil of the darkest sort. The power of the Nine Hells has coveted Elturel for generations. And now it has claimed what it long sought.
Vlahnya: |
Reya! Champions, this is Reya of the Hellriders. My friend, what happened here?
Reya: |
An unspeakable horror, Vlahnya. The Companion that was the city's savior... it turned against us. Its light was corrupted to darkness, turning to a black orb that vomited forth shadow across the land -- and then took Elturel away.
Bruenor: |
Got a whole lot o' questions that need answerin'. But there's survivors here that need our help first. Champions assemble! And get these folks ta safety fast!
21 | Defeat 25 Monsters | In the aftermath of Elturel's fall, villains both mortal and immortal are at large. Take them out!
Vlahnya: |
Reya, the survivors... the refugees... they're so few in number.
Reya: |
Only those outside the city were spared, my friend. I was one of those, out training to the north. I saw the Companion's light go out. I saw the city crumble and sink below the horizon. I've done what I can to get folk moving for Baldur's Gate, but I fear it isn't enough. Even now, the fiends of the Nine Hells stalk the landscape.
Nayeli: |
You've done far more than most would be able to in the face of such destruction. And you have us at your side now. Show us the rest of these fiends, and we'll show them that the survivors of Elturel are not theirs for the taking.
22 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The imps fall back -- and regroup with a pack of more powerful bearded devils!
Succubus: |
Run, mortals! My devils desire sport in this hunt. You wouldn't want to disappoint them.
Nayeli: |
The disappointment is all yours this day, fiend. The survivors of Elturel are under our protection. And you and your devils will return to the pits that spawned you.
Succubus: |
Brave words, knight! I heard similar oaths as the Companion darkened. And then all the Hellriders in the city followed their forebears on a final journey to the darkness!
23 | Collect 25 Bearded Devil Weapons | These bearded devils are a powerful mercenary force. Grabbing up their weapons might help slow them down!
Bruenor: |
Stay sharp and light! Them devils is faster than they look.
Jarlaxle: |
They're moving to hem us in. And there's something else moving in behind them. Something small...
Bruenor: |
No... that squawkin'... I know that sound! Abyssal chickens!
Jarlaxle: |
Oh, not this again. | |||||
Bruenor: |
Nay, I mean it this time! 'Tis tha cluckin' scourge o' tha underworld! Everybody on me! Then get ready ta hit 'em hard!
24 | Defeat 25 Monsters | As you struggle to get the edge on these devils, the chaotic fury of abyssal chickens tips the balance of the fight!
Nayeli: |
Stand, fiend! Where is all your bravado now?
Succubus: |
Mortal fool! You think you can endure against the power of Avernus? Elturel is only the first city to fall! My master will claim your world piece by piece, soul by soul! And in the end, you will beg for the death that ends your eternal torment!
25 | Defeat the Succubus | These fiendish forces can't be allowed to lay claim to the survivors of Elturel's fall. Take them down!
Nayeli: |
The succubus spoke of Avernus. The realm of Zariel the archdevil. What fiendish plots are behind all this?
Reya: |
No... I pray it isn't true. Zariel is tied to Elturel. When she was an angel, she came to the mortal realm to lead an army to Avernus, the great battlefield of the Blood War. But she was corrupted, the tales say. She became the archdevil she is today.
Celeste: |
I've heard that tale, Reya. I don't doubt there's more to it than that, but whatever the truth, it seems that Zariel has turned her attention back to the mortal realm. And more lives hang in the balance.
Bruenor: |
Then we gotta decide what our next move is. Tha last o' tha refugees has cleared out. Them fiends is banished.
Reya: |
Then Baldur's Gate should be our next destination. The refugees will need our help. And there is evil in that city that might be connected to Elturel's fall.
Nayeli: |
I agree. Come, Champions. We cannot tarry.
Jarlaxle: |
The refugees are moving slowly by the look of it. We should be able to stay on top of any trouble before it reaches them.
Boo: |
Squee! | |||||
Jarlaxle: |
Let me guess. He's excited about heading home?
Minsc: |
Oh, yes. But also, he says there is fiend behind you.
Jarlaxle: |
Wha...? | |||||
26 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The Chionthar River path seems like the safest route to Baldur's Gate -- but you have some enemies to clear out first!
Jarlaxle: |
I think that's the last of the crocodiles.
Terminatur: |
Pssst. It isn't. They always come in waves. Also, you're standing on my mushroom.
Reya: |
Terminatur! Hello there, my gnomish friend. Are you all right? There has been... trouble recently.
Terminatur: |
Oh, I'm fine. Just collecting mushrooms for dinner. Care to join me?
27 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Clearing the area should give you a bit of time to join this friendly forest gnome for dinner. Wow. When was the last time that happened?
Jarlaxle: |
Look out! Wild goose coming in hot!
Terminatur: |
Zouillotte! Stand down.
Zouillotte: |
HONK! | |||||
Minsc: |
A wise goose indeed. We shall help you collect your mushrooms, goose!
Terminatur: |
She's not going to eat the mushrooms, you know...
Minsc: |
FOR THE GOOSE! | |||||
28 | Collect 25 Mushrooms | A pack of bullywugs is ready for your assault! But the crazed goose running toward them seems to give them pause...
29 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The bullywugs mount a counterattack!
30 | Defeat the Pixie Leader | The champion of the bullywugs arrives! Riding a rabbit...?
Minsc: |
Nice thorn whip, my friend whose name I can no longer remember!
Terminatur: |
Oh! Thank you. I'm Terminatur.
Minsc: |
A MIGHTY name indeed! | |||||
Terminatur: |
It's a family name, given to me by my grandmother.
Celeste: |
Thank you again for your hospitality. Now you'd best make your own way. We have a terrifying puzzle on our hands.
Terminatur: |
Ooh! We love a mystery! | |||||
Terminatur: |
This is strange. Why are so many folk passing through the woods?
Reya: |
My friend, I fear to tell you. Elturel, the grand city... it has... fallen.
Terminatur: |
No! They had the best market on the river. I dislike going all the way to Baldur's Gate.
Minsc: |
You... dislike Baldur's Gate?
Terminatur: |
It's dark and scary, and not a lot grows there.
Minsc: |
But they have a statue. Of me!
Boo: |
SQUEE! | |||||
Minsc: |
Boo too. | |||||
31 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Xanathar Guild fighters have their eyes on the refugees. Clear them out!
32 | Defeat 25 Monsters | A mob of unruly sailors pushes out from the shadows and attempts to rob your party! Are you going to take that?
Terminatur: |
Ah! I recognize these drunken revelers. It was they who pilfered my cipal fruit tree. Can you help me collect the fruits they stole? Shoo drunks! Shoo!
Zouillotte: |
Honk? | |||||
Terminatur: |
Go get 'em, girl. | |||||
Minsc: |
We shall work on your catch phrase, gnome. Boo?
Boo: |
Squeak? | |||||
Minsc: |
GO FOR THE EYES! | |||||
33 | Collect 25 Cipal Fruits | The fruits of Terminatur's tree smell slightly like rum. Or maybe that's just the drunks carrying them?
34 | Defeat 25 Monsters | As if the trail wasn't crowded enough, a pack of red wizards pop out of the bushes!
Terminatur: |
Thank you for the fellowship and the food, friends. May your journey be safe and filled with yummy treats!
Celeste: |
I'm sorry you're leaving, Terminatur. Though we only just met, you've proven a good friend.
Terminatur: |
All good things must come to an end. Also, this is my house.
Jarlaxle: |
Interesting. Do you have friends from Thay staying over by any chance?
Terminatur: |
No. Why do you ask? | |||||
Jarlaxle: |
I can see Red Wizards scouting around outside. Perhaps you can help us with a few more thorn whips while we clear them off your doorstep?
Terminatur: |
... Let's do this. | |||||
Minsc: |
MUCH BETTER, FRIEND! | |||||
35 | Defeat the Red Wizard Agent | Clearing out your new friend's burrow will be a solid favor. Now to get the red wizards on side...
Evelyn: |
Oh no, y'all. Is Strahd calling us back to his realm?
Shandie: |
Oh, the fog? Nah. That's normal for Baldur's Gate. It's always foggy, dark, and dangerous.
Celeste: |
Sounds like... fun? | |||||
36 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The closer you draw to Baldur's Gate, the thicker the fog grows along the road.
Bruenor: |
Gotta say, I ain't feelin' a real warm welcome here.
Jarlaxle: |
This welcome is downright benevolent for Baldur's Gate. You haven't been here in a while, clearly.
Nayeli: |
The bulk of the refugees are close behind us. Let's get this roadway clear for them. Come on!
37 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Sailors along the river are out looking for a good time -- for some very narrow definition of 'good.'
38 | Collect 25 Symbols of Bhaal | Many of these bandits and ruffians bear the symbol of Bhaal! Collecting the symbols of their murderous lord might take them down a notch.
Nayeli: |
Be on your guard, friends. The city is filled with cultists such as these, dedicated to dark gods -- and to even worse entities.
Minsc: |
This is all just talk. Baldur's Gate is fine place. Very safe. I have never felt threatened here.
Boo: |
Squeak? | |||||
Minsc: |
Well, yes. Except that one time.
Boo: |
Squeak! | |||||
Minsc: |
All right, and that time too. No time to talk! Move on, everyone!
39 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Bandit wizards join the fray from range! Don't let them hem you in!
40 | Defeat the Bandit Barbarian | The barbarian who leads this bandit horde calls for a final assault! Stand fast!
Jarlaxle: |
Looks like the first groups of refugees have already arrived. And the locals don't seem happy about it.
Reya: |
It's everyone for themself in this city. As if the folk of Elturel haven't suffered enough.
41 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The sailors along the outer city road are already engaged in battles of their own -- and are happy to add you to their list of enemies!
42 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Another mob of sailors joins the frenzied fray!
43 | Collect 25 Symbols of Myrkul | The symbols of Myrkul are common among these rabble. Show the god of death what you think of his followers!
Jarlaxle: |
Baldur's Gate's success as a mercantile center has always astonished me. With the number of sailors constantly brawling in the streets, I have no idea how any shipping actually gets done here.
Bruenor: |
Maybe drunken sailors is just their chief import. And business is boomin'!
44 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The fight follows you as you draw ever closer to the city gate!
45 | Defeat the Pirate Captain | A pirate captain holds court over these unruly sailors. Finish him off and the mob should disperse!
Nayeli: |
There's the city gate at last. Perhaps the guards can do something about this violence.
Jarlaxle: |
Well, I wouldn't look too closely at the uniforms of the ones performing that violence.
Reya: |
Those are the soldiers of the Flaming Fist. A mercenary force that protects the city with an iron hand.
Bruenor: |
Oi! So who's protectin' tha folk o' tha city from them? They're beatin' up them refugees tryin' ta get through tha gate! Robbin' common folks!
Nayeli: |
Then it looks like it's up to us to make a difference...
46 | Defeat 25 Monsters | The soldiers inside Baldur's Gate bear far too much resemblance to the brigands outside. Protect these refugees!
47 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Giant rats disturbed by the chaos are running amok -- and seem keen to aid the Flaming Fist soldiers as they press you!
48 | Collect 25 Symbols of Bane | These drunken inn patrons are looking for trouble! Clear them out before they hurt someone -- including themselves!
Reya: |
We're turning the tide here at last. Thank you for aiding my fellow refugees, friends. But I must leave you for a time.
Vlahnya: |
Are you sure, Reya? You know the dangers of this place.
Reya: |
Indeed. But I also have suspicions that someone in the city knows about Elturel's fate. I will say no more now. There are too many of the Flaming Fist listening.
Nayeli: |
We could go with you, Reya. There's safety in numbers.
Reya: |
But also visibility. I need to keep a low profile for now. But thank you.
49 | Defeat 25 Monsters | Another force of soldiers seems intent on beating these poor revelers! But not if you have your way!
Captain Zodge: |
You there! Adventurers! Assault on members of the Flaming Fist is trouble you don't want in my city.
Nayeli: |
What about assault by the members of the Flaming Fist? You seem to have no problem turning a blind eye to that.
Captain Zodge: |
These Elturel refugees are rabble, each and every one of them. Looters, pickpockets, ne'er-do-wells. They'll be fine fending for themselves -- outside the city gates.
Bruenor: |
Looks like we got a bit o' a difference o' opinion regardin' tha obligations that them who can fight have fer them who can't.
Captain Zodge: |
Quite the dilemma, that. And only one way to settle it. Guards! Take these malcontents down!
50 | Defeat the Captain Zodge | This Flaming Fist captain has issued a challenge! Time to show the leaders of Baldur's Gate what the Champions are made of!
Bruenor: |
We been doin' our best ta not hurt yer soldiers, captain. But ye keep throwin' 'em at us, that might be like ta change.
Captain Zodge: |
Indeed. I admit I'm impressed, Champions. Yes, I recognized you. And now that you've proved your worth in combat, let's talk about a job that needs doing.
Nayeli: |
You think we'd serve you? You're no better than the bandits and the criminals who run these city streets.
Captain Zodge: |
Except for the fact that those bandits and criminals answer to me in the end -- and I'm the only one who can tell them to leave your precious refugees alone.
Bruenor: |
So it's detente ye want? Ye give tha refugees a fair shake in exchange fer this job?
Captain Zodge: |
A fair enough trade it seems to me. If you're successful, of course.
Bruenor: |
Then start by gettin' yer Flamin' Fist dogs backed off o' tha folks at tha gates. And then tell us what dirty work ye got in mind...
